I got this message from beyond the digital grave…well, it was on myspace anyway. It was from a high school senior named Toria. She and her friend jack had seen me play with Stars in 08, and they had a great time. Anyway Toria asked me if I would cover this song for her friend. The tour of my apartment balcony is free. Relationships in bands mirror romantic relationships in every way except the obvious one (and sometimes not even in that way). When a band ends, it’s exactly like a long term relationship ending. For some time, I’ve been on the rebound band wise. Some, like my wonderful wife, would say too long. I’ve had a lot of the classic rebound relationships; I’ve played with bands who weren’t as into me as I was into them, I’ve played with bands who just weren’t in my league, and I’ve even had a one night thing with The Thornleys.

In reality I’m still comparing every experience with new musicians with that of my former band. And it’s tough, cause my band was good, and pretty big. When we played shows, people came, people listened, people cheered.

So how do you get over that is the question. I’m giving myself the advice I’d give anyone in the rebound; you won’t meet anyone when you’re looking, and until you are completely comfortable with being single, you won’t be able to be with someone new.

So I’m going for that. I’ve been busking (not glamorous!) and I’m playing open mics. I’m not worrying about response, or crowd size, or topping anything i’ve done before. I’m just playing. I’ll let you know how it goes.

In the French Quarter on friday I’ll be busking, that is to say I’ll be playing covers into the open air in an effort to get some money thrown at me. It’s like musical stripping!

Can you help me pick some songs please?

I’m drinking and the bartender goes: “Once you let New Orleans into your soul it’s hard to let go (of)”. This bartender is from where I’m from (almost) so the words go down easily like the blonde beer he’s pouring. I’m starting to understand the breast-centered art in New Orleans; this town is a bosom. It’s not a hit of speedy ambition like New York, or a steady stoic paycheck like DC. It’s a comforting place, at once stimulating and relaxing. It’s Yin and Yang, wholesome and sinful.

These are my last songs from DC and who knows what my first New Orleans effort will sound like. My hope is that whatever I make it is natural, beautiful and comforting. I have no rib to give, but I will create nonetheless.

My car is packed I’m ready to go. We are heading south, ending our trip in New Orleans where we’ll be living, and where I’ll be doing Canary. Dc, I love you, good luck. I’m very proud that I got my new band Canary off the ground while still living in the 202. With some luck that band will be making the trip to New Orleans with me and we’ll be playing music from Canary’s three EP’s.
